Formalities

Citizens of the European Union

You have to bring the following documents with you from your home country:

  • Passport and/or Identity card (of accompanying family members, too, if applicable)
  • Scholarship confirmation, if applicable
  • European Health Insurance Card 
  • Birth certificate (birth certificate of accompanying family members, too, if applicable)
  • Marriage certificate (if your husband/wife accompanies you)    *  Certified copies of master and, if applicable, dissertation certificate as well as of other academic certificates
  • Letter of invitation or confirmation of admission from the institute (for doctoral candidates)
  • Letter of Admission to study (if available, only for doctoral candidates)
  • Vaccination card (if available)
  • Current enrolment certificate of your home university or ISIC card (for doctoral candidates who are still enrolled as students in their home country)

The following documents are important in case of family reunion:

  • Proof of financing (proof of salary, account statement etc.) or formal obligation
  • European Insurance card or of any other insurance valid in Germany

Citizens of other states

You need the following documents prior to your arrival:

  • Passport (also for accompanying family members)
  • One visa (in case visa required; also for accompanying family members)
  • Invitation of your supervisor at the institute
  • Scholarship certificate, if applicable
  • Two biometric pass photos (one for the visa and, later, one for the residence permit)
  • Foreign travel health insurance, which covers the first weeks of your stay in Germany
  • Letter of admission to study (if existing, applies for doctoral candidates only)

The following documents are needed in situ in addition in many cases:

  • Passport photograph (in case of employment at the university)
  • Birth certificate (birth certificate of accompanying family members, too, if applicable)
  • Marriage certificate (if your wife/husband accompanies you)
  • Certified copies of master or dissertation certificates and of other academic certificates
  • Vaccination card (if existing)
  • Current enrolment receipt of your home university or ISIC card (for doctoral candidates who are still enrolled as students in their home country)

The following documents have to be submitted to get a visa or a residence permit in case of family reunification:

  • Proof of financing
  • Entered health insurance for the accompanying family member
  • Rental contract for a sufficiently large accommodation in Rostock
  • Confirmation of your landlord that the family is allowed to move in 
  • Additional documents might be needed – please contact the visa office in charge to inquire the procedure in due time 

Document Translation

All official certificates and documents have to be submitted in German or English translation, except for the documents needed for a visa and residence permit, which HAVE TO be translated to German. 

We recommend that you to get your important documents translated in your home country as translation services in Germany, depending on the language, are rather expensive.
