Admission and enrolment as a doctoral candidate

Enrolment

Enrolment, also called matriculation, is the designation for the student admission process at a university. You can enrol as a doctoral candidate at any time at the University of Rostock, as soon as you have a doctoral subject and a mentor - irrespective of the doctoral phase and the doctoral process.

There is actually no obligation to enrol. The doctoral regulations of the individual faculties do, however, contain different stipulations in this regard.

For enrolment, you must submit the documents listed in our overview Admission and Enrolment as a Ph.D. Student to the student secretariat.

You can download the required forms on this page:

    (also called "Application for Matriculation")

    • The original must be sent to the graduate academy.
    • In addition, a copy must be submitted to the student secretariat.

Hints and tips

Admission

The application for admission to studies must be distinguished from the application for admission to doctoral studies.
Both applications can be made independently and at any point during the doctoral phase.
We recommend early application for both areas for formal verification of the admission requirements - particularly for doctoral candidates who have completed their previous studies in a university outside Germany.

Application for admission to studies

in the student secretariat

The application for admission to studies must be submitted upon enrolment in the student secretariat. The admission process will include a formal verification as to whether the applicant meets the requirements for starting to study. This mainly concerns ...

  • the existence of a suitable higher education degree - especially in the case of degrees from other disciplines or foreign degrees and degrees from universities of applied sciences.

Application for admission to doctoral studies

in the faculty

For admission to doctoral studies, the faculty checks whether the applicant fulfils the formal requirements for admission to doctoral studies. This mainly concerns ...

  • the existence of a suitable higher education degree - especially in the case of degrees from other disciplines or foreign degrees and degrees from universities of applied sciences.

Admission to doctoral studies can also be linked to the fulfilment of conditions, for example ...

  • the existence or acquisition of certain professional competences in the doctoral field or
  • the existence or acquisition of language skills.

The respective requirements and admission procedures are specified in the doctoral regulations of the faculties.

Please ask the dean's office of your faculty in which form and when you have to apply for admission to doctoral studies.

Semester fee

After successful enrolment, you will receive a confirmation of enrolment ("Immatrikulationsbestätigung"). After receiving this, you must transfer a semester fee of currently € 214.00 to a university account. The student secretariat will inform you of the account details.

The semester fee must then always be transferred before the start of a new semester (meaning in January and June).
Please note: Even if you enrol at the end of a semester, you still have to pay the full semester fee for the current semester. The semester fee finances some of the benefits mentioned below (e.g. the semester ticket).
